How to set up your desk ergonomically

  1. Set your chair first. Adjust the seat so your feet rest flat on the floor and your thighs are roughly parallel to the ground, with a 90 to 110 degree angle at your knees.
  2. Match the desk to your elbows. Sit with your upper arms relaxed by your sides and your elbows bent at about 90 degrees. The desktop should sit at the height of your forearms so your wrists stay straight while typing.
  3. Position your monitor. Place the top of the screen at or just below eye level, about an arm's length away, to keep your neck neutral.
  4. Alternate sitting and standing. If you have a sit-stand desk, switch posture every 30 to 60 minutes and re-check that your forearms stay parallel to the floor in both positions.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out the correct desk height for my height?

Your ideal desk height matches your seated elbow height: sit with your back straight, feet flat on the floor and elbows bent at 90 degrees, then measure from the floor to the underside of your elbow. For a person around 170cm (5'7") tall this works out at roughly 73 to 75cm. This calculator estimates that figure from your overall height using established ergonomic body proportions.

What height should my standing desk be?

When standing, your desk should sit at your standing elbow height so your forearms stay parallel to the floor and your wrists stay neutral while typing. That is typically around 4 to 6cm lower than your standing elbow measurement if you prefer a slight downward angle. The calculator gives you the standing surface height for your body.

Where should the top of my monitor be?

The top of your screen should be at, or just below, your seated eye level so your gaze drops slightly to the centre of the display. This keeps your neck neutral and reduces strain. Position the monitor about an arm's length away.

Is this desk height calculator accurate for everyone?

The results are a strong starting point based on average anthropometric proportions, but limb length varies between individuals. Use the figures as a baseline, then fine-tune by a centimetre or two until your shoulders are relaxed, wrists are straight and feet rest flat on the floor.
